Blizzard has decided to make a change in how gamers pay for the World of Warcraft effective

Blizzard has decided to make a change in how gamers pay for the World of Warcraft effective immediately. The only Game Time available is the 60 days offer, says Eddie Makuch of Gamespot. The company has removed the rest of the Game Time options, no more 30 days, 90 days, and 180 days. Besides Game Time, the subscription offerings remain unchanged.

This means that from now on only the 60-day version is available for purchase, which costs 25.98 euros. The other variants, each with 30 or 180 days, have completely disappeared from the offer. As of now, Blizzard Entertainment has not given an official explanation as to why this change occurred in the first place. Therefore, of course, there is a lot of room for speculation. The website Wowhead, for example, assumes that Blizzard intends to take action against the equally active and annoying bots in World of Warcraft (buy now € 14.99) in this way. They very often use the WoW tokens to buy the 30-day game time and thus remain active. Since this "small" variant is no longer available, Blizzard is hoping to curb bot activities.

Blizzard's change seems to be pushing players to use recurring subscription options instead of one-off options.

Often times, players use the Game Time subscription option as they can collect in-game gold to purchase them. Making 60 days the only option has the potential for negative side effects on players who farm gold to pay for their sub on a monthly basis.

Fan backlash against these changes has been swift, but Blizzard has yet to clarify its reasoning or offer any kind of response to the controversy. At the end of the day, Blizzard is a business, and World of Warcraft exists to make money. That being said, if the game’s players feel they are being extracted of their hard-earned money unfairly, it’s only going to hurt World of Warcraft and the game’s community in the long run.

This change is officially announced to be effective immediately. But for those who already bought other Game Time offering options will remain until the subscription expires. To renew the subscription moving forward, they can only choose the available offering.

However, this is a double-edged sword, because this change also affects those players who just want to return to the world of World of Warcraft for a month without having to take out a subscription. The latter is still available in the 1-month version (cost: 12.99 euros per month), but for many players it does not seem as non-binding as buying game time separately.

Wowhead.com speculates the move might be to shift game time buyers into one of Blizzard’s subscription plans, which leads to more money for the company.
