League of Legends is officially headed to mobile devices with a version called Wild Rift

One of the biggest PC games in the world is finally coming to other platforms. At its 10th anniversary celebration this evening, Riot Games announced a new version of League of Legends called Wild Rift that will be coming to both mobile devices and unspecified consoles.

It looks to be largely the same as the main version of League, with near-identical MOBA gameplay. But it’s been tweaked to better accommodate the new platforms, including a new twin-stick control scheme, a new map, and shorter matches that clock in at around 15-20 minutes long. “Wild Rift is not a port of LoL on PC,” Riot says, “it is a new game built from scratch to ensure it is a polished, legitimate LoL experience that’s worth players’ time.”

The Wild Rift website has the first details about the new game. The game features a 5v5 player count and it also features "revamped" controls. "Team up to take down the enemy Nexus on a new 5v5 map designed for new platforms, with faster games and revamped controls," reads a line from its announcement. There will be about 40 champions in Wild Rift at launch, with more to come over time. Like the PC version of League of Legends, Wild Rift is free-to-play, and players can unlock all the champions without spending real money. Players can, however, spend real money on various cosmetics and other extras. Riot explained that it rebuilt League of Legends from scratch, "like the whole thing," to bring it to console and mobile.

You can sign up for the open beta now on the Wild Rift website. The first tests will begin in China, but they will expand to other regions soon. This alternative version of League of Legends is getting full support from Riot. It has a ranked mode, and the studio is promising that it is always free-to-play with no pay-to-win mechanics. And PC LOL players will get bonuses for picking up the game on another platform.
